What motorhome do the Radfords drive?

Right now we're in a Dethleffs XL Family, it's a coachbuilt, 6 seats, 6 berths, air suspension, and a proper automatic gearbox (bit different from the old Swift). We also run a VW ID Buzz Cargo that Knights Custom Conversions built out for us, that's the electric one Steve does solo runs and shorter trips in.

Where are the Radfords from?

We're based in Milton Keynes. Steve grew up in Port Talbot, South Wales, big beach, steelworks at one end, Swansea and the Mumbles at the other. Lyndsay is originally from Yorkshire.

How long have the Radfords been motorhoming?

Accepted Answer

Since 2007, that's getting on for twenty years. The first van was a 1989 Talbot Pilote. The channel started around 2020, but the motorhoming habit is much older than that.

Which insurance does Roaming Radfords use?

Accepted Answer

Sterling Insurance, they cover the motorhome for the UK and mainland Europe. One thing to flag: Sterling doesn't cover Turkey, so when we drove through there we sorted separate cover for that leg. Did Steve drive solo to Morocco in the electric ID Buzz?

Yeah, both legs solo. Steve drove the ID Buzz from the UK all the way to Morocco (over 2,000 miles each way), charging the whole route. Lyndsay and the boys flew to Essaouira to join him for a family week, then flew home. Steve drove back on his own. It was the Sahara run, late 2025.

It's a folding external shelf, Steve fitted it to the old Swift Kon-Tiki and mostly uses it as a workspace for the Cadac Carri Chef. Phil bonded it to the van with Sikaflex 522 (activator first), and it's been rock solid. Lyndsay is Steve's wife and the other half of Roaming Radfords. She handles the Yowzer business side (VAT, payroll, the operational backbone), she's the family history nerd (loves museums, castles, ancient sites) and she's the cook. The Steve & Lynds channel has more of her day-to-day content.
